012 In a Bookshop

Mary and Lilly were out for an afternoon stroll in the park.
Suddenly, it started to rain.
And in a few minutes it was coming down in buckets, so Mary and Lilly ducked into a bookshop to wait out the storm.
“Seeing as we’re here, maybe I’ll pick up a book for my dad’s birthday” said Mary.
“He’s so hard to shop for. I never know what to get him”, she continued.
“What have you got in mind?” asked Lilly.
“Oh, I don’t know, I was thinking of getting him the new whodunit by Tom Clancy.”
“Really?” said Lilly, “I’m surprised, I thought he didn’t like mysteries.”
“Well, what would you suggest?” inquired Mary, “a cookbook?″
“Heaven forbid!” cried Lilly. “He can’t even boil water.”
“He’s hopeless in the kitchen.”
“Do remember when he tried to bake a cake that time?”
“How could I ever forget it?” replied Mary. “He nearly burned the house down!”
“Let’s just browse, I’m sure we’ll find something”.
The two women wandered about in search of just the right book.
“Hey, what do you think of this, Mary? A do-it-yourself book on home repairs, he’ll just love it.”
“I don’t think so Lilly, remember when he tried to fix the dishwasher?
He flooded the entire basement! Let’s keep looking.”
Mary spotted an arts and crafts book.
“Lilly, how about this? You know how he loves to work with his hands.”
“Oh, Mary, you’ve got to be kidding,” said Lilly.
“Don’t you remember when your father took up pottery?
He nearly poisoned himself by accidentally drinking the glaze.”
Oh, that” said Mary, “I’d completely forgotten about that”.
“He was in the hospital for a month.”
They continued looking.
Lilly stopped, picked up a book that was on display and said “How about this book on home safety?”
“PERFECT”, said Mary,“Good choice. But I just know he’ll get a paper cut that’ll require stitches.”

Mary e Lilly stavano facendo una passeggiata pomeridiana nel parco.
All’improvviso cominciò a piovere.
Dopo pochi minuti stava piovendo a dirotto, e Mary e Lilly si rifugiarono in una libreria per aspettare che il temporale passasse.
“Visto che siamo qui, forse compro un libro per il compleanno di mio padre”, disse Mary.
“E’ difficilissimo comprare un regalo per lui,
Non so mai che cosa prendergli”, continuò.
“Hai qualcosa in mente?” chiese Lilly.
“Non lo so, sto pensando di comprargli il nuovo giallo di Tom Clancy”.
“Sul serio?” disse Lilly, “sono sorpresa, pensavo che non gli piacessero i gialli”.
“Allora che cosa mi consigli?” domandò Mary, “Un ricettario?”.
“Per carità!” esclamò Lilly, “Non è in grado nemmeno di far bollire l’acqua”.
“E’ proprio un caso disperato in cucina”.
“Ti ricordi quella volta che tentò di fare una torta?”
“E come potrei dimenticarlo?” rispose Mary,
“Ha quasi completamente bruciato la casa!”
“Dai, giriamo un pò, sono sicura che troveremo qualcosa”.
Le due donne vagavano nel negozio in cerca del libro giusto.
“Guarda, che ne pensi Mary? Un libro fai-da-te sulle riparazioni in casa. So che a lui piacerà”.
“Non credo Lilly, ti ricordi quando ha cercato di aggiustare la lavastoviglie?
Ha completamente allagato lo scantinato! Continuiamo a cercare”.
Mary ha individuato un libro sulle arti e mestieri.
“E questo, Lilly? Sai quanto gli piace lavorare con le mani”.
“Oh Mary, stai scherzando” disse Lilly. Non ti ricordi quando tuo padre si dedicò alla ceramica?”.
“Si è quasi avvelenato dopo aver inavvertitamente bevuto lo smalto”.
“Oh, quella volta” disse Mary, “L’avevo completamente dimenticato”.
“E’ stato in ospedale per un mese”.
Continuarono a cercare.
Lilly si fermò, prese un libro in esposizione e disse: “Che ne pensi? Un libro sulla sicurezza in casa.”.
“PERFETTO” disse Mary. “Ottima scelta. So già che si taglierà con la carta e ci vorranno dei punti!”.
