I've been studying Spanish, and I've been dropping hints that I need a new dictionary for the past two months. No, I don't think so. It's way too light to be a dictionary. The last time we spoke I mentioned that I really wanted an iPhone, but I can't imagine that he's actually gone out and bought me one. He's very generous, but he's not made of money. However, you can never tell with him. He's always surprising his friends. Something tells me it's made of paper. Could it be money? I could really use a little extra cash. I've been hoping to go away for a weekend. Well, the only way to solve this mystery is to unwrap it and open the box. What on Earth? It says that he's made a monetary donation in my name to help the Earthquake victims in Japan! Now that's a perfect present! Along with these goodies there'd be the usual milk, tea, or coffee, and of course orange juice. On one cold morning however, instead of finding the customary pitcher of OJ, there was a pitcher of rather thick-looking red liquid. "What the heck is that?" I wondered. I was repelled as my mother poured this gunk into my juice glass. Did she expect me to drink it? She could tell by my look of horror that I wasn't about to let that stuff enter my mouth. "It's tomato juice," she told me. "Try it, it's good" "That's disgusting! It looks like blood!" I replied. "Don't be silly, now come on and try it, I know you'll like it" "NO!" I refused. "But you like tomatoes. This is just like tomatoes in a blender. I promise, you'll love it". "I want orange juice!" There are many possible strategies, and the ones you use depend on your own individual learning style. The most obvious tactic in learning here is the repetition and reviewing of the material. In just one single video there is a wealth of information: idiomatic expressions, phrasal verbs, vocabulary, grammatical structures, and so on. After becoming very familiar with one of the videos, for example, you could change some of the verbs, vocabulary, and tenses in the text to create your own new story, thereby actively using what you've learned to fit your own needs. This demonstrates real learning, and not just memorization. Learning a language is not "linear" in nature. When young children learn to speak their mother tongue, they don't study grammar. They learn through a variety of experiences using a combination of senses. This is one reason why we dance and sing when we teach children. The same holds true for adults, who are just very big children after all! The more sensory experiences you have when learning, the greater the chances are that you'll retain what you've learned, and the greater ability you'll have to put that knowledge to practical use. These videos are not a panacea, but they are an important step. Other helpful advice is to watch small pieces of a film, or a TV show on DVD, or another format that allows you to switch subtitles on and off. Changing the audio back and forth between English and your own native language is also helpful. I'd like to mention here that on the website (www.engpods.com) and the YouTube channel (EngPodsTV), you can switch the subtitles on and off by clicking on "CC" in the lower right-hand corner of the video. This allows you to watch a video first in English (or your native language), and then to watch it in the other language to see how much you've understood. Ci sono tante strategie possibili, e quelle che sceglierete dipendono dal vostro personale metodo di studio. La tattica di apprendimento più ovvia è la ripetizione ed il ripasso della materia. In un solo video c'è un vasto patrimonio di informazioni: espressioni idiomatiche, verbi fraseologici, vocaboli, strutture grammaticali, e molto altro. Dopo aver familiarizzato con uno dei video, ad esempio, potreste cambiare dei verbi, vocaboli e tempi nel testo per creare una nuova storia personale, utilizzando quello che avete imparato adattandolo ai vostri bisogni. Questo dimostra un apprendimento autentico, e non una semplice memorizzazione. L'apprendimento di una lingua non è una cosa "lineare". Quando i bambini piccoli imparano a parlare la loro lingua madre, non studiano la grammatica. Imparano tramite esperienze usando una combinazione di sensi. Balliamo e cantiamo proprio per questo motivo quando insegniamo ai bambini piccoli. E' la stessa cosa per gli adulti, che sono dei bambini cresciuti in fin dei conti! Più sensi usati quando studiate, più alte sono le probabilità che ricorderete quello che avete imparato, e più alta sarà la vostra capacità di mettere in pratica questa conoscenza. Questi video non sono una panacea, ma fanno parte di un passo importante. Un altro consiglio utile è guardare pezzettini di un film o di un telefilm su un DVD o un altro formato che vi permette di attivare e disattivare i sottotitoli. Cambiare l'audio dall'inglese alla vostra lingua madre (o vice versa) è anche molto utile. A questo punto vorrei ricordarvi che sul nostro sito web www.engpods.com e sul nostro canale YouTube EngPodsTV, c'è la possibilità di attivare e disattivare i sottotitoli cliccando sull'icona "CC" in basso a destra sulla barra del video. Questo vi permette di guardare un video prima in inglese (o nella vostra lingua madre) e poi nell'altra lingua per vedere quanto avete capito. Cercate di vedere uno dei video 2 o 3 volte prima di consultare i testi. Nella mia esperienza con gli studenti, trovo che dopo il primo ascolto spesso si sentono delusi. Gli chiedo sempre di valutare la loro comprensione con un punteggio (con una scala da 1 a 10, o in percentuale). Invariabilmente dopo il primo ascolto hanno un punteggio basso. Dopo il secondo, capiscono di più. Ed arrivati al terzo ascolto capiscono molto di più. Dopo aver fatto un ripasso dei testi, quando tornano al video, spesso capiscono il 100%. Ci vogliono pochi minuti per fare tutto questo. E se fanno ripassi durante la settimana seguente, diventa parte della loro memoria a lungo termine. Hanno davvero imparato! Un'altra strategia è di familiarizzare con il testo prima di vedere il video. In questo modo sarete preparati per quello che ascolterete. Un altro consiglio è quello di ascoltare solo l'audio senza guardare il video. Potete scaricare le tracce audio dal nostro sito web www.engpods.com cliccando sulla scritta MP3 nella pagina "Video list" che trovate nel menu principale. Potreste anche provare a vedere il video senza l'audio e cercare di leggere le mie labbra mentre parlo, provando a ricordare le parole che uso. Tornate indietro e riprovate. Se per caso avete degli amici che sono interessati al miglioramento del loro inglese, fate un gioco. Interrogatevi l'un l'altro sui vocaboli e le espressioni. Questo è un grande metodo per memorizzare. Traducete delle canzoni. Io ad esempio trovo le canzoni dei Beatles particolarmente utili. Anche ascoltare passivamente è molto utile. Ad esempio, ascoltate mentre lavate i piatti o mentre pranzate. Il cervello "assorbirà" le informazioni automaticamente ad un livello cognitivo più profondo. DIVERTITEVI! Giocate con l'inglese. Alcune persone mi hanno detto che parlo troppo velocemente nei video, mentre altre persone pensano che io parli troppo lentamente. Vorrei ricordarvi che uno degli obiettivi di questi video è introdurre delle espressioni idiomatiche tipiche. Dal momento in cui avrete più familiarità con queste espressioni, saprete che cosa significano quando le incontrerete nelle situazioni vere, per esempio nei film, quando viaggiate, o quando leggete, ecc., Esaminare anche un solo video a settimana (conoscendolo bene) darà i suoi frutti. La qualità è meglio della quantità. Infine, voglio incoraggiarvi ad apprezzare ogni piccolo passo in avanti che fate. Non sottovalutate questo fattore. Pancakes are also known as flapjacks, hotcakes, and griddle cakes. You can buy packaged mixes but they're expensive and unnecessary. Let me show you how easy and economical it is to make pancakes from scratch. All you need is: 1 ¼ cups, or 180 grams of sifted all-purpose flour. 1 tablespoon or 10 grams of baking powder 1 tablespoon, or 10 grams of sugar ½ teaspoon, or a good pinch of salt 1 beaten egg 1 cup, or 250 mL of milk 2 tablespoons or 30 mL of olive or sunflower oil and an ungreased crepe pan. Sift the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar into one bowl. Then mix the milk, oil, and beaten egg into another bowl. Pour the mixture over the flour. Stir using a wooden spoon until the dry flour disappears. The batter must be lumpy, so don't over-mix it. This is the secret for fluffy and light pancakes. Pre-heat the crepe pan. Using a small ladle, or a large spoon, put some batter onto the pan. Start with a circle of about 10 centimeters or so until you get the hang of it. After that you can make smaller or larger pancakes as you wish. Let the pancake cook for about 40 to 45 seconds. You'll see bubbles forming on top, and if you look carefully you'll notice the edges will begin to stiffen. Lift the edge of the pancake with the spatula and check if the color underneath is golden brown. If it is, flip it over and cook it for another 30 to 40 seconds. The pancakes should be eaten immediately while they're piping hot. Traditionally, pancakes are eaten with salted butter and real maple syrup, but the possibilities are endless. You can serve them with Nutella, honey, or jam for example. Strawberries and whipped cream is also very nice. Use your imagination! Making pancakes from scratch is an easy and economical alternative to packaged pancake mixes. It also makes for a good activity that you can share with friends and family. Buon appetito! Sono anche conosciute come flapjacks, hotcakes e griddle cakes. Adesso vi faccio vedere quanto è facile ed economico farle partendo da zero. Ci vogliono: 1 bicchiere e un quarto (o 180 gr) di farina tipo doppio zero setacciata 1 cucchiaio (o 10 gr) di lievito in polvere 1 cucchiaio (o 10 gr) di zucchero 1 cucchiaino (o un bel pizzico) di sale 1 uovo battuto 1 bicchiere (o 250 ml) di latte 2 cucchiai (o 30 ml) di olio di oliva o di girasole e una padella antiaderente per le crepes, non oliata o imburrata Setacciate farina, lievito, sale e zucchero in una coppa. Poi mescolate il latte, l'olio e l'uovo battuto in un'altra coppa. Versate la miscela ottenuta sopra la farina. Mescolate con un cucchiaio di legno finché non si vede più la farina asciutta. La pastella dovrebbe essere grumosa, quindi non mescolatela troppo. Questo è il segreto per avere delle frittelle soffici e leggere. Preriscaldate la padella. Con un mestolo piccolo, o un cucchiaione, versate della pastella nella padella. Cominciate con un diametro di circa 10 cm finché non vi abituate al procedimento. In seguito potrete fare delle frittelle più piccole o più grandi a vostro piacimento. Fate cuocere le frittelle per 40 o 45 secondi. Vedrete delle bollicine che si formano sopra, e se guardate con attenzione, noterete che i bordi cominciano ad irrigidirsi. She was beside herself with embarrassment. When the priest left she threatened to take the bird back to the shelter, but in reality she didn't have the heart. Instead, she picked Polly up and said "Listen up! You had better stop cursing, or else!" But after a few minutes Polly began to utter profanities that would have made a sailor blush. Later that week, Brenda had her mother-in-law over for lunch. And of course Polly was his old foul-mouthed self. Brenda was totally humiliated.
